WINNING OR LOSING IN MARRIAGE: OTHNIEL AND SAMSON

Text: Judges 3:1‑11 and Judges chapters 13-16*

I.    Introduction

  1. "How I met my wife". It all began in the summer of ... and she has been a great help and   encouragement to me in the ministry. I hope I have been the same for her.

  2. A powerful relationship. A great theme of movies and songs.

  3. This relationship can increase either blessings or problems in the Christian life. George Verwer said marriage is 'God's university'. Singles and married couples must also relate.

II.   Judges

  1. Apostasy (turning away from the Lord) came through marriage (Judges 3:6).

  2. The first apostasy and salvation through Othniel (3:7‑11).

  3. Othniel's secret weapon, Acsah (1:11‑15).

    1. Caleb was her father ‑ the family - father  (I Samuel 8:1-3)

    2. The field was her ‑ the inheritance - land

    3. The springs ‑ the development - water

  4. Samson's difficulties.  Judges 13‑16.

    1. The Philistine woman - 14:1‑3 - 'unbeliever' (Ruth 1:16 and Ezra 9:14)   

    2. The prostitute - 16:1‑3 - 'immoral'

    3. Delilah - 16:4‑6 - 'materialist'

III. Other Biblical cases in which marriage led to defeat or to victory

  1. The case of Solomon and his many wives who turned his heart from the Lord(1Kings 11:1‑11).

  2. Joshua 23:12, 13 ... Joshua 24:15 ... as for me and for my house we will serve the Lord (AV/KJV).

  3. Ahab kills Naboth and takes his vineyard, ... urged on by Jezebel, his wife  (1Kings 21:25 NIV).

  4. 2Corinthians 6:14  ... unequally yoked ... (AV/KJV).

  5. Acts 18:24‑28  A spiritual, united couple help a great  preacher.
