The Lost Sheep

Matthew 8:14; 9:9-13; 10:5-8

Leper 8:1-4

-He kneeled before Jesus.

-You can cleanse me.

-Jesus touched him.

-Tell no one.

-Show yourself to the priest.

-Offer the gift.

-... as a testimony ... (Jesus’ testimony)

-... to them .... (to the priests)

Matthew the tax person 9:9-13

-Follow me and he followed.

-Jesus ate with him and sinners.

-The Pharisees complained.

-The sick need doctor, not the healthy.

-I (Jesus) came to call sinners, not the righteous.

-Learn mercy not sacrifice – Jesus sacrificed so we can show mercy!

The 12 are sent to the lost sheep 10:5-8

-Go not to the gentiles, nor to the Samaritans.

-Go to the lost sheep of Israel.

-The kingdom is near.

-Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, and cast out demons.

-Freely you received, freely give.

Note some parallels among the three stories:

1. The leper is unclean, the tax person is sick=sinner, the sheep are lost.

2. Jesus comes near by touching the leper, calling and eating with the tax person, and ministering and preaching to the lost that the kingdom is near.

3. Jesus and his workers cleansed, showed mercy and gave freely.
